Equipment list for trips to Kilimanjaro with Brynje of Norway

The list is intended as an indicative packing list for Brynje's trips to Kilimanjaro. Feel free to follow the list, but consider for yourself what and how much you need. Also rely on your own experiences, equipment and clothes you know and feel comfortable in. Wear shoes you know and have walked with before. Use tried-and-tested clothes and equipment. Then you may avoid chafing and unpleasant surprises along the way. Pack sensibly; clothes and equipment you do not need in the mountains are left in Moshi. There is a maximum limit of 15 kg for the porters on the mountain. Remember that second-hand equipment may work fine.

  • Participants will get good discount on ordinary Brynje products. You also get a set of Super Thermo top and bottom + Arctic Hat when you sign up. Read more and sign up

1. Backpack and bag

Duffel bag, 90-120L, waterproof
Ex. The North Face or Helly Hansen. The bag must not weigh more than 15 kg.

Backpack 35-45 L with rain cover
In this bag you have a change of clothes and what you need on the go every day. Calculate space for 3 liters of drink, shell jacket, shell trousers, fleece jacket, hat, neck, gloves and other things (camera, toilet paper etc.). The lighter the better, max 6-8 kg is ideal.

Waterproof packing bag, e.g. 2 x 15 L

2. Clothing above

Sports bra
In the lowlands, thin, synthetic or wool bras are fine. Higher up, thick wool sports top will provide good warmth.

3 undershirts in varying thicknesses
The shirts can be worn separately or layered for extra warmth when we climb to the top. Ex:
- Mesh shirt next to the skin: Super Thermo (women - men) or Wool Thermo (women - men)
Classic Wool Zip Polo
- Wool Thermo light (women - men)

Shirt or thin, long-sleeved shirt
Long-sleeved, thin layer that protects against the scorching sun in the lowlands.

T-shirt, wool
For use in the lowlands. The Classic light T-shirt (women - men) is light, airy and smells little, even after long-term use.

Ullgenser
Arctic Zip polo er god på kjølige morgener og kvelder i fjellet. En klassiker på kalde ekspedisjoner og et skikkelig koseplagg innendørs i telt eller hytte.

Wool sweater
Arctic Zip polo (women - men) is good for cool mornings and evenings in the mountains. A classic on cold expeditions and a real cozy garment indoors in a tent or cabin.

Fleece jacket
Polar jacket was made for cold Greenland expeditions. It has windproof panels in the front and mesh on the inside. The jacket is light, insulates very well and dries quickly. Ideal to have lying around in your daypack if it gets chilly.

Down jacket
Medium light but thick down jacket with hood. Important for keeping warm when it's cold both in camp and en route. Also works as a pillow - stuff in a wool sweater and tie back.

Shell jacket with hood, wind and water resistant
Schoeller shell jacket is intended for high mountains and expeditions in cold and cool environments with changing weather: women - men

Rain poncho

Hands:
- thin woolen mittens (when it is convenient to touch the fingers)
medium wool/mesh mittens (also works in shell mittens)
- thick felted wool mittens (use in shell mittens)
- shell mittens

On peak night it is cold. Use thick felted wool mittens + shell mittens.

3. Clothing underneath

Briefs/ Boxers
Sufficient for own use. Wool is recommended as it is not possible to wash clothes in between
- Wool boxers: women - men

2 longs
- Netting longs: Super Thermo (women - men) or Wool Thermo (women - men)
- Classic wool longs: women - men

Shell trousers, wind and water resistant (women - men)

Lightweight hiking trousers for use in the lowlands
The Adventure softshell pant (women - men) has good ventilation and is a comfortable all-rounder.

Airy shorts for use in the lowlands.

Wool socks
2 pairs of thin
2 pairs of thick

4. Head and neck

Warm hat
Arctic hat is recommended. If you do not have a jacket with a hood, the hat must be wind and waterproof.

Neck
Wool neck to keep warm, but also to breathe through on dusty trails. Also bring a regular buff.

Cap or sun hat - protects the head and forehead

Sunglasses

5. Shoes & poles

Crocs or slippers
Important in camp where shoes are put on and off a lot.

Mountain boots
Absolutely necessary in the mountains in cold and wet areas. Important with good support for the foot and ankle in rough terrain and on the peak night. Use shoes that you have used so that you avoid chafing. Thin nylon stocking on the inside prevents chafing. Check that the shoelaces are not worn.

Poles
These should have a telescopic function, so that they can be easily pulled together and placed in a bag or backpack.

6. Sleeping bag & underlay

Sleeping bag
It gets colder the higher we go, so choose a good, compressible down sleeping bag.Comfort temperature must be around -20: The bag must withstand 10 degrees colder than -10, which is what we must expect at night. Such a sheet bag inside the sleeping bag increases the temperature by around 3-4 degrees and is hygienic because the silk can be washed afterwards. Example, sleeping bag

Compression cover so that the sleeping bag takes up little space and is easy to pack up.

Sleeping pad  - inflatable
