The Tian Shan Mountains, also known as the "Mountain of Heaven," are the most fascinating and least explored mountain area in the world. The untouched and raw nature in the area is combined with a climate that changes quickly between warm sunny mountain sides to thunderstorms with snow and hail. In this dramatic setting, I took part in "Tian Shan - Mountain Ultra", a competition that not only tests physical endurance, but also mental strength.
The race stretched well over 200 kilometers with a total ascent of over 10,500 metres, challenging the participants with altitudes between 2,400 and 4,000 metres, where the oxygen level is noticeably lower. It wasn't just the landscape that made this race demanding; the weather conditions varied from 31°C with scorching sun to 2–3°C with hail and rain on the same day. In addition, as participants, we must have food for a week, equipment, clothing, first aid, sleeping bag etc. in the rucksack that we run around with. The result of this demanding competition proved to be yet another proof of what can be achieved with the right preparation, mental strength, and a good portion of love for running around in the mountains. Frode Lein runs with Brynje Classic Light merino wool T-shirt
Both Frode and his girlfriend Liss use Brynje's wool T-shirts when they run in Norwegian nature and participate in competitions together. Frode writes:
- When I run long distances, even the slightest irritation can develop into painful sores. In contrast to synthetic fabric, chafing and sore nipples, merino wool is known for its soft comfort and good breathability. At the same time, merino wool is naturally moisture wicking, which maintains comfort over time. Traditional seams on synthetic T-shirts tend to collect salt from sweat, which over time makes them stiff and uncomfortable against the skin. This leads both to chafing and reduced performance. The thin T-shirts in merino wool from Brynje have flat seams that do not rub against the skin, even after many hours and days in the wilderness.
