70 years have passed since Hillary and Tenzing climbed Mt. Everest
On May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed Mount Everest as the very first people in history. Next to the skin, they wore Brynje's original string shirt!
When the Englishman John Hunt planned his famous Everest expedition, he shocked with completely new theories about weight, speed, clothing and comfort. Thus, the entire expedition was equipped with Brynje string shirts! On 29 May 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay stood at top of the world's highest mountain. Both were wearing Brynje's original string shirt next to their skin. We were the first undershirt at 8848m and quote the hero: "We knocked the bastard off".
The story of Brynje and mesh garments
Henrik Brun came from a farm in Uvdal, Norway. Alongside the farm work, Henrik preoccupied himself with exploring ways to better equip the Norwegian Army. He was especially interested in the idea of improving undergarments. In 1921 he started to develop a string vest that resembled the historic Viking armour known as "Brynje". Brun’s idea was to construct an insulating and ventilating garment that could trap warm air between the outer clothes and the skin. At first, he experimented with making vests from fishing nets but later switched to using cotton. In the late 70s, Super Thermo mesh came along with unique properties: Low weight, efficient moisture transport, fast drying, top insulation and extreme durability. Brynje has also developed wool mesh in itch-free, soft Merino wool.
Brynje still equips demanding expeditions with mesh.
